Summer Topics 2012

Instead of sending home the usual class curriculum letters this term, this topic information was published in our weekly newsletter on Thursday 26^th April 2012.  All classes will be studying The Diamond Jubilee this half term and The Olympic Games after half term.  It is fairly safe to say that most people will only see one royal diamond jubilee in their lifetime and it will be many years before the Olympic Games are held in the United Kingdom again.  So, we have decided to focus on these two special events during the summer term. 

Each class teacher has planned a special range of activities, events and celebrations during the next few weeks – and much more information (including photographs) will be given in our newsletters on a weekly basis.

We are placing an even greater emphasis on ensuring that, in addition to our daily English and Maths lessons, essential English and Maths skills, understanding and knowledge are also covered through an even wider range of topic and additional curriculum work.  Every opportunity for the children to make use of and develop their ICT skills is being provided – with an exciting range of activities planned through our special summer topics.

English & Maths Curriculum Information for Reception Class

Communication, Language and Literacy

·         Tradional Tales with kings, queens, princes and princesses.

·         Stories about kings, queens, princes and princesses (e.g. The Queen’s Knickers by Nicholas Allen, Prince Cinders by Babette Cole)

·         Retell traditional tales – using props and puppets and in words and pictures.

·         Writing invitations to a royal party.

·         Designing their own menus.

·         Writing their names in the style of calligraphy.

·         Reading recipes when cooking.

·         Designing ‘Wanted Posters’ for certain characters.

·         Explore and describe different things – dried peas, cooked peas, straw.

Problem Solving, Reasoning and Number

·         Money – coin recognition, exploring different ways of paying for things (cash, cheque, credit/store/debit card, Paypal etc).

·         Counting in steps of 1, 2, 5 and 10.

·         Adding and subtracting.

·         Extending number sequences.

·         Recognising and continuing patterns.

·         Shape recognition and describing their properties – 2D and 3D.

·         Time – sequencing events, reading o’clock and half past.

·         Capacity – language full, half full, empty.

·         Length – comparing which is the longest/shortest etc.

·         Mass – which is the heaviest/lightest etc.
